Big Wild Read...
The Histree Trail Project and Wildlife Trust teamed up during the Summer to run a Big Wild Read session at the Lord Louis Library, Newport as part of the Woodland Trust's Big Wild Read campaign.
The Big Wild Read is an annual event which aims to keep children busy all summer long! The aim is to read six books from your library, keeping track of them in a special folder as you go. As well as reading books, children can find out about endangered animals and ways to help the environment.
Kathy Grogan, Education Officer at the IOW Wildlife Trust read a story to the group called 'What Planet are you from Clarice Bean?' in which the main character thought about all things environmental from trees and planets and holes in the sky, to litter bugs and eco warriors. The story was followed by several tree-related activities which included printmaking leaves and decorating wooden discs from locally sourced materials to make a natural necklace.
The children were encouraged to think about why trees were important to them and some chose to write pledges on the backs of the leaves they had printed. The children then made a fantastic job of decorating the 'reading tree' with many brightly coloured leaves and pledges, forming a fantastic centre piece in the middle of the Children's Library.
